Actress Charlize Theron has been designated a UN Messenger of Peace

Academy Award-winning actress and activist Charlize Theron of South Africa and the United States has been designated by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

Her special focus will be ending violence against women. Some of the film roles she has chosen reflect her concern with the issue. Ms. Theron is perhaps best known for her Oscar-winning performance in Monster, in which she played Aileen Wuornos, a serial killer whose youth was characterized by abuse.

Recognized for her work to focus attention and mobilize support on social issues, particularly in South Africa, Ms. Theron joins nine other United Nations Messengers of Peace who advocate on behalf of the Organization.

Messengers of Peace are individuals who possess widely recognized talents in the fields of art, film, literature, music and sports, helping to raise worldwide awareness of the Organization's ideals and activities. Through their public appearances, contacts with the international media and humanitarian work, they expand public understanding of how the United Nations helps to improve the lives of people everywhere.

Ms. Theron's designation will be officially announced at a press conference at United Nations Headquarters on Monday, 17 November 2008.
