Guinea Bissau holds smooth parliamentary elections

The people of Guinea Bissau in West Africa on Sunday went to the polls to elect members of parliament.

The United Nations and its partners, including the European Union, supported the elections with funds.

The spokesman for the United Nations Office in Guinea Bissau, Vladimir Monteiro, says the elections were about stability and notes that the turnout was high.

"We had about 75 to 80 percent, and women and youth participation was very important. Women participated as voters, but they also were very active as agents working for the polling stations."

Vladimir Monteiro says the results of the elections could be announced as early as this week.
