UN says greenhouse emissions in industrialized countries continue to rise
17/11/2008
A new report issued today by the UN climate change secretariat says that greenhouse gas emissions in industrialized countries continue to rise.
According to the agency, between 2000 and 2006, emissions of the 40 nations with reporting obligations under the UN convention on climate change rose by more than 2 per cent. The report says that the biggest increases came from economies in transition, which rose more than three times as much.
Yvo de Boer, the UN's top climate change official, says the figures clearly underscore the need for political action at the climate change conference that opens in Poznan, Poland, in just two weeks.
