UN arranging talks between government forces and rebels in DRC: Doss
UN special envoy Olusegun Obasanjo was in the Ugandan capital, Kampala Tuesday holding talks with President Yoweri Museveni.
Mr. Obasanjo has been holding talks with leaders in the region to see how best to end the hostilities between Government forces and the rebel forces of the Congress for the Defence of the People in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.Special envoy in the DRC Allan Doss told reporters the Congress for the Defence of the People announced it was renewing the ceasefire and pull back from its forces to allow the UN mission -MONUC to control those areas and make it a zone of separation.
Doss says he hopes the new proposal from the CNDP and preparations for verification mechanism of the ceasefire will go forward.
"We're trying to build on this dynamic that's been created by President Obasanjo over the last three or four days to stabilize the situation, improve the humanitarian access and then pave the way for the political and diplomatic processes to go forward. Because I think everybody agrees these problems are not going to be solved by force alone."
Doss says efforts are being made to arrange talks between government forces, the Congress for the Defence of the People and the UN peacekeeping mission.
