Crisis in the DR Congo has a regional dimension

UN and Africa - a weekly 15-minute radio programme on political, social, economic and other developments related to Africa.

-As the crisis continues in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, diplomatic efforts are underway to find a political solution to the conflict. Fabienne Hara of the International Crisis Group says that a regional dimension of the conflict, involving Rwanda needs to be addressed.

African Charter promotes democracy in Africa

-The African Union (AU) is working with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance to promote democracy in Africa. These efforts are based on the African Charter for Democracy, Elections and Governance, adopted by the AU in 2007.

Karthala volcano has benefits for people of Comoros

-The Karthala volcano has for a long time been seen as a threat to the people on the island of Grande Comore, in the Comoros. However, the volcano is now increasingly being recognized for its economic advantages. UNDP representative in the Comoros, Opia Mensah Kumah, says the volcano can be a tourist attraction and a source of electricity and water.
