Secretary-General condemns deadly attacks in India

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned a series of shootings and blasts in India's largest city which killed upwards of 100 people and injured scores more.

The attacks took place on Wednesday evening in Mumbai, the country's financial capital. According to reports, gunmen armed with grenades and automatic weapons had targeted seven sites in the city including the main train station and two hotels. They are also reported to have taken several hostages as the siege continues.

In a statement released Wednesday, Mr. Ban said such violence is "unacceptable," and he called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly.

Mr. Ban extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the wounded, and expressed his solidarity with the people and Government of India.

The UN Secretary-General also reiterated his conviction that no cause or grievance can justify indiscriminate attacks against civilians.
