Security Council strongly condemns Mumbai attacks
The members of the Security Council have strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on Wednesday in Mumbai which included the taking of hostages and which have caused numerous deaths and injuries.
In a statement issued on Thursday, they expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of India.More than one hundred people are reported to have died and over 300 have been injured in the attacks.
The Security Council urged all States to cooperate actively with the Indian authorities to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.
The Council reiterated that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation.
The attacks, which have now stretched into their third day, targeted two major hotel complexes and several other locations in India's largest city and its financial center. Rescue operations are still ongoing to try and free the remaining hostages.
