Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur takes up his new post

The Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur, Djibril Bassole(photo), arrived in El-Fasher the capital of North Darfur today to take up his new post.
Mr. Bassole was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General and the African Union Chairperson in June to conduct full-time mediation between Darfur rebels and the government.
The top diplomat of Burkina Faso is expected to use his wealth of experience to re-energize the stalled Darfur peace process.
He arrives in the troubled region of Sudan at a time when the joint United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur has expressed concern about the recent clashes in the Kalma camp for internally displaced people in Darfur.
More than 30 civilians died when Sudanese government forces and police raided the camp on Monday claiming to be looking for drugs and weapons.
