UN spokesperson says states decide on recognition of states
26/08/2008
The spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General told reporters today that recognition of states is a matter for sovereign states to decide.
Michele Montas (photo) was responding to questions based on reports that Russia has recognized the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia.
She said the Secretary-General has expressed his position on the situation in Georgia in statements made since the beginning of August.
She said in particular the Secretary-General welcomed the six-point agreement between Presidents Nicholas Sarkozy of France and Dmitry Medvedev of Russia to resolve the conflict in South Ossetia.
"Today's developments may have wider implications for security and stability in the Caucasus. The Secretary-General regrets that ongoing efforts to find a common solution on the way forward in the crisis in Georgia within the Security Council may be complicated"
Ms Montas said the Secretary-General strongly emphasized the urgent need to protect all civilians living in the conflict zones.
