Red Cross remains concern about displaced people in Pakistan

The International Committee of the Red Cross has reiterated its concern about the people who have been displaced by fighting between Pakistani forces and the armed opposition on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Red Cross says that when the conflict intensified approximately 200,000 people were forced to flee their homes in the villages of the Bajaur Agency with nothing except what they were wearing.

ICRC spokesperson in Geneva, Anna Nelson, says 80 per cent of the displaced people are women and children who are now staying with host families in improvised camps in locations such as schools.

"They lack everything and need everything, basically including shelter, access to clean water and sanitation, health care, and food. It's worth pointing out that this is a rather fluid situation that the conflict is developing in its own pace and according its own logic, and large numbers of people are on the move, which is why we felt we need to act quickly."

Ms. Nelson says her agency will provide five camps with water tanks, bladders and distribution ramps, as well as medical care for the wounded.
