UNAMID investigating reported attack on Darfur camp

Peacekeepers from the joint UN/African Union mission in Darfur, UNAMID, are investigating reports of an attack by Sudanese troops on internally displaced people in the Kalma camp in South Darfur.

UNAMID's spokesperson, Nouredine Mazini, says there are still unconfirmed reports of 32 casualties sustained and more than a hundred civilians injured in Kalma camp, which is home to at least 80,000 people, many of them women and children.

"We are currently investigating circumstances having led to casualties involving numerous individuals within Kalma camp today. Kalma camp is approximately 25 kilometers from Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. We are examining the conditions having led to the open armed confrontations between IDPs and the government armed elements, involving about 60 vehicles to search for arms and wanted persons on the basis of an official search warrant."

The joint UN/AU special representative, Rodolphe Adada is calling on the parties to refrain from violence against civilians. The UN has also called for the immediate establishment of a humanitarian corridor so that the injured may be evacuated.
