Guinea-Bissau meeting to consolidate UN peacekeeping in West Africa
25/08/2008
A high-level meeting of UN envoys and heads of peacekeeping missions in West Africa started Monday in Bissau.
The meeting is reviewing the overall situation in the sub-region and discussing specific issues of regional interest, in particular forthcoming Presidential elections in November in Cote d'Ivoire, and legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea. Spokesman for the UN office in Guinea Bissau, Vladimir Monteiro says drug trafficking is also on the agenda.
"It's a very important region. It was affected by war and now we have some problems in the region, drug trafficking, the consolidation of democracy. So this meeting will be a very important moment to harmonize their policies here in the region".
Welcoming this initiative, the members of the UN Security Council have called for UN peacekeeping missions in West Africa to pull together their assets and exploit synergies among them to achieve greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
