The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged the President of Rwanda to continue contributing to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The Secretary-General made the appeal during his visit to Rwanda where he has been meeting with President Paul Kagame and other government officials.

The Secretary-General's visit came amid press reports that President Kagame has threatened to withdraw from UN peacekeeping operations in Africa.

It follows allegations in a leaked UN report which suggest that Rwandan troops have committed atrocities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

"Both President and I are disappointed by the draft of the report having been leaked.  The United Nations is interested in establishing all the facts relating to incidents in the DRC and covered by this mapping exercise.

The report, commissioned by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights details incidents of atrocities and killings of civilians in eastern DR Congo between 1993 and 2003.

It is due to be officially released on October 1.
