In his message to mark International Literacy Day, he says literacy should be accessible to women everywhere adding that it "is an essential foundation for development and prosperity."

The Secretary-General points out that "literacy transforms the lives of women, their families, communities and societies" and that literate women are more likely to send their children, especially girls to school.

According to the United Nations chief, investment in literacy for women yields high development dividends.
