New UN Trust Fund brings hope to trafficked women
Over two million people are trafficked every year around the world. In Europe alone, half a million are sold into prostitution and criminal groups in make billions of dollars from this heinous crime. Most of the victims are from the Balkans or former Soviet Union. Jana Kohut is a young woman born in Bosnia who moved to Slovenia four years ago to get a University degree.
UN Envoy warns DRC rebels, rape spree will not go unpunished
At least 154 civilians were recently raped in 13 villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Attackers blocked the road and prevented the villagers from reaching outside communications. Margot Wallstrom, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict, told reporters at UN that these savage rapes will not go unpunished.
Ghana prepares to reduce maternal deaths
The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) says 500,000 women die every year during pregnancy or child birth and a staggering 90 per cent of these deaths occur in Africa and Asia. Ghana's maternal mortality rate is an estimated 450 per 100,000 live births. Compared with other countries this might seem low. But the UNFPA office in Ghana sees cause for alarm.
