Anti-poverty programmes targeting the poor in isolation won't work
Targeting the poor in isolation won't work, according to the UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).
In a report launched in Geneva on Friday, the institute says that approaches that separate poverty from broader economic growth and development are misconceived and may provide short term solutions.
Lead author of the report, Yusuf Bangura says well- paid jobs, available to people of all incomes, classes, gender and ethnic origins are vital.
"We believe that employment, growth and structural change should be at the centre of economic policy making. In successful countries where poverty has been reduced, those countries have built and maintained competent bureaucracies that are adequately remunerated."
The UNRISD researcher also stresses the importance of giving the poor influence in policy making.
