-Non-governmental organizations meeting in Melbourne, Australia, this week resolved to urge governments to pump billions of dollars into the global fight against poverty. A Nigerian medical Dr. Eleanor Nwadinobi representing Medical Women's International Association speaks on rural widows and the empowerment of rural women through dissemination of information to fight harmful traditional practices.




Over 30,000 Somalis are displaced by conflict in Mogadishu

-More than 30,000 people have fled the Somali capital, Mogadishu, since July as a result of fighting between insurgents and government forces. A relief agency says the situation is becoming more critical for the people who are sheltering on the axis between Mogadishu and Afgooye.






UNDP promotes Millennium Development Goals in Ghana

- The UN Development Programme is helping Ghana in bringing the Millennium Development Goals message to its 24 million citizens. UNDP says the greatest challenge is meeting the goal on maternal health, while the goal of combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, UNDP is likely to be met.
