In March this year the Secretary-General and the Chairman of the IPCC asked the IAC in March this year to carry out the review following press reports that the climate body's assessment of climate change was flawed.

The IAC, which is a multinational organization of the world's science academies, released its report on Monday.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, the Secretary-General "expresses his gratitude to the InterAcademy Council for conducting this fully independent review of the working practices of the IPCC."

"He looks forward to reading the review's recommendations and urges the 194 member governments of the IPCC to study the IAC review carefully and to take appropriate action as soon as possible" the statement says.

The statement adds that the "Secretary-General firmly maintains that the fundamental science on climate change remains sound."
