- The UN was outraged this week over mass rapes that have been committed by armed elements in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UN Secretary-General immediately dispatched the man in charge of peacekeeping operations to the country to look into the matter.

- Piracy off the coast of Somalia was under the spotlight in the Security Council on Wednesday. The UN Secretary-General said over the past seven months there have been 139 piracy-related incidents off the coast of Somalia. He presented seven options for prosecuting and punishing pirates for their crimes.

Maize harvest in Zimbabwe

- The food security situation has improved significantly in Zimbabwe. A joint mission of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) to the country in June this year found that the area planted under maize, the main staple, increased by 20 per cent this year. However, WFP points out that 1.68 million people still need food assistance.
