UN needs China on board the common efforts to address climate change: Ban

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hopes to get China's support in efforts to reduce the impact of climate change.

The Secretary-General who began a three day visit to China Tuesday says a top priority on his trip will be to discuss with the Chinese leadership in depth how China can [come] onboard in this climate change process:

"I know that they have very serious national challenges. I appreciate such challenges. In the course of rapid industrialization, China somehow has become one of the biggest emitters. In fact China has overtaken even the United States in terms of emitting this greenhouse gas."

Secretary-General Ban says it is important to have China on board this common effort to address climate change.

He says China is a very important global power and it has a global responsibility.

The Secretary-General says he'd also like to express gratitude to the Chinese leadership for their strong support to the United Nations agenda.
