Torrential floods in Pakistan, described as the worst in 80 years, have caused immense destruction and suffering and have affected more than 14 million people - one tenth of the country's population. At the launch of a humanitarian appeal and with millions of people sleeping out in the open on high ground, Martin Mogwanja, the Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan, says, "We need to expand this response radically and very, very fast."

UN Economic Commission for Europe fights for the disappearing Aral Sea

Earlier this year, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, visiting the Aral Sea, called it a "shocking disaster". According to the Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper, the Aral Sea has become "one of the planet's worst environmental disasters". What is the problem with the Aral Sea, a body of water located in Uzbekistan and Kazakstan? UN Radios Yvette Morris put that question to Marton Kraznai, a Regional Adviser with the UN Economic Commission for Europe.

There are only five years to go to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs, eight universally agreed targets designed, among other things, to end poverty and hunger, combat HIV/AIDS and provide universal primary education. At a roundtable discussion on promoting achievement of the MDGs in the Asia/ Pacific Region, Sha Zukang, head of Economic and Social Affairs at the United Nations, discusses the challenges and successes this diverse region is experiencing.
