Perspective
MIGRATION: NOT UNDER THE UN UMBRELLA - There are 191 million migrants worldwide, of which 30-40 million are illegal. Nations are recognizing that national laws alone are no longer sufficient to manage migration properly and that dialogue with the sending countries is essential. At the same time, at a UN high-level meeting on migration in September, member states agreed that future meetings will be held under the aegis of individual nations rather than in a UN forum. This program explores the sensitivities of nations on this matter, why so few nations have ratified the UN Convention on Migration and what needs to be done to make migration safer for the thousands who risk or lose their lives to improve their lot.
