The UN Security Council has imposed new sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in response to its ongoing nuclear and ballistics weapons programme.

Council members unanimously adopted a resolution that also condemned the country's latest missile launch, carried out in late November.

Paulina Greer reports on Friday's meeting.

The resolution prohibits countries from supplying the DPRK with crude oil, refined petroleum products and other natural materials and equipment.

Among other measures, countries are also asked to repatriate North Korean migrants working in their territories within 24 months.

Sixteen officials from DPRK have also been subjected to an asset ban and travel freeze.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the Council's "continued unity" on the issue.

He said this is essential to achieve the goal of denuclearization, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson.

The UN chief added that  "the only way forward for a comprehensive peaceful and political solution requires de-escalation and open communication channels, now."
