The role of entrepreneurship in promoting global development is the focus of a three-day meeting which opened in Bahrain on Tuesday.

The World Entrepreneurs Investment Forum 2017, taking place in the capital, Manama, has been organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the Government.

May Yaacoub attended the opening ceremony and filed this report.

The forum aims to leverage entrepreneurship and creative thinking to strengthen sustainable development around the world.

In a video message to participants, UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised its focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 17 goals—which include combating hunger and promoting decent work for all—seek to achieve a more just and equitable world by 2030.

Hiroshi Kuniyoshi is Deputy Director General at the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

"The role of impact investment and innovation is further highlighted by the Sustainable Development Goals and especially Goal 9, which seeks to 'build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.'"

More than 1,000 participants—including entrepreneurs; representatives of micro, small and medium enterprises, as well as financial institutions—are attending the forum, which ends on Thursday.

Some of the themes they will discuss include the importance of private capital in filling the funding gap to meet the SDGs, and the challenges facing women entrepreneurs.

Reporting from Manama, Bahrain, I'm May Yaacoub.
