A major alert has been issued for hundreds of thousands of Myanmar youngsters who've been forced to seek shelter in what's been described as a "hell on earth" of makeshift camps in southern Bangladesh.

UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) raised the alarm in Geneva.

In a new report published on Friday about the emergency – sparked by a security operation in Myanmar's Rakhine state seven weeks ago – the UN agency warned that youngsters account for well over half of the nearly 600,000 people who have arrived in Bangladesh in recent weeks.

Here’s Daniel Johnson’s report from Geneva.
