UN Member States are being urged to fully implement sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

The appeal was made by the UN Security Council which has condemned the country's latest ballistic missile launch.

Dianne Penn reports.

The Security Council held urgent consultations on Friday to address what it described as "the highly provocative" missile launch which took place earlier that day.

The intermediate-range missile flew over Japan and was launched just days after the Council adopted a new round of sanctions against the DPRK.

In a press statement issued after the meeting, the 15 ambassadors demanded the country, also known as North Korea, to immediately halt such actions.

They also reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the region at large.
