UN chief stresses solidarity with refugees on International Day of Peace

Refugees are the focus of this year's commemoration of the International Day of Peace, observed annually on 21 September.

At a ceremony at UN Headquarters on Friday to mark the day, Secretary-General António Guterres called on people everywhere to show solidarity with the 65 million people who have been forced to flee their homelands due to conflict and persecution.

He said "those of us fortunate enough to enjoy peace and prosperity should do everything we can to allow others to enjoy it as well."

"When more and more doors and minds are being closed to refugees, let us show solidarity. Let us highlight the shared benefits of migration to economies and to nations.  When others receive the support they need and deserve, we are all more secure and better off."
