The international community's efforts to record rights violations in war-torn Syria "must continue" after the resignation of a leading member of a UN Commission of Inquiry, the panel's two remaining investigators said on Monday.

In a statement, commissioners Paulo Pinheiro and Karen AbuZayd thanked Carla Del Ponte for her more than five years of service, adding that she had told them in June of her wish to stand down.

Her replacement may be appointed in coming weeks, Cedric Sapey from the UN human rights office, OHCHR, told Daniel Johnson.
