It is "vital" that the status quo for Jerusalem's holy sites is preserved, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process said on Tuesday, following days of violent unrest that has claimed seven lives.
Nickolay Mladenov was briefing the Security Council, and welcomed the Israeli government's decision on Monday to remove metal detectors from the entrance to the al-Aqsa compound, which Palestinian leaders said was a violation of the 1967 status quo rules, established after Israel occupied East Jerusalem.
