UN ready to assist China following deadly mudslides

The United Nations has announced its readiness to support China in the wake of  deadly mudslides in Sichuan province on Saturday.

At least 15 people were killed and scores are missing, according to media reports.

Dianne Penn has more details.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres was saddened to learn of the loss of life and devastation in Maoxin county, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson.

The UN chief also saluted efforts by national relief and recovery teams.

The statement underlined that the UN stands ready to assist the authorities.

The Secretary-General also expressed condolences to the Government and people of China and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the landslide.
