António Guterres met with more than 20 committee members in Washington, DC, with more meetings scheduled through Thursday.

He thanked the members for their generosity and support provided by the United States to the United Nations."

Secretary-General condemns Nigeria suicide bombings

A series of deadly suicide bombings in northeast Nigeria have been condemned by the UN Secretary-General.

At least nine people reportedly were killed and 13 injured in the attacks, which took place on Sunday and Monday in Borno State.

The UN chief expressed hope that those responsible will be swiftly brought to justice.

He also underlined the UN's support to the Government of Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

UN cultural chief deplores death of veteran journalist

The head of UN cultural agency, UNESCO, has deplored the recent death of a Franco-Swiss journalist who had been injured in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Veteran reporter Véronique Robert was in the country for the France 2 TV channel's programme "Envoyé Spécial" when she was seriously wounded by an explosive device on 9 June.

Two of her colleagues were killed in that attack.

Ms Robert was transferred to a hospital near Paris where she died on Saturday.

UNESCO chief Irina Bokova has issued a statement denouncing her death.

"Violence of any kind is unacceptable," she stated, "especially when it is used to silence those who shed light on a society in conflict."
