Nearly 1.9 million children under five in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are severely malnourished amid a spike in ethnically motivated violence, the UN said on Monday.

Rein Paulsen, who heads operations in the country for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), explained to journalists that there has also been a sharp increase in civilians displaced by fighting in the last 15 months, to a total of 3.7 million.

He told Daniel Johnson in Geneva that conflict has traditionally been in the east of the country but it has taken hold in Kasai Central and surrounding provinces.
