UN supporting implementation of DRC political agreement

The top official at the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been meeting with political leaders to find ways to implement an agreement that paves the way for elections in the country.

UN Special Representative Maman Sambo Sidikou on Sunday received a delegation from opposition groups, according to a statement from the mission, MONUSCO.

He also will be meeting with other leaders and civil society in connection with the accord.

The agreement, signed on 31 December 2016, calls for elections to be held before the end of this year and a peaceful transition of power in its aftermath.

It was mediated by the Catholic Church in the country.

The MONUSCO statement underscored that there is "no alternative" to its full implementation

"We must all work together to overcome the obstacles to the holding of credible elections by the end of 2017," the statement concluded.

Explosion near WFP convoy in Somalia leaves two injured

Two private security guards escorting a convoy from the World Food Programme (WFP) in Somalia were wounded in an incident on Sunday, the agency has reported.

The convoy was returning from an area on the outskirts of the capital, Mogadishu, when an explosion occurred 100 metres behind it.

Two WFP staff and a visiting journalist who were in the convoy were not harmed.

Somalia is facing a drought which has left millions struggling to survive.

WFP said the convoy was providing life-saving emergency food and nutritional assistance to affected people.

UN General Assembly holds SDGs financing event

What will it take to finance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), described by the UN as "a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity"?

That question will be answered during an event at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday organized by the president of the General Assembly.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has more on the SDG Financing Lab.

"The one-day event will focus on how to drive the transformation to align financial markets with sustainable development as well as showcase concrete ways in which Member States can approach financing of different SDGs."

The 17 goals have a deadline of 2030 and the UN says it will cost "in the trillions of dollars" to implement them.
