A new high-tech water monitoring tool developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will allow farmers to "produce more with less".

That's the view of Jippe Hoogeveen, a Senior Land and Water Officer with FAO, describing how the new open-access database, which went live on Thursday, will work in practice.

He said that the challenge was to use water more efficiently, in light of the fact that demand is outstripping supply and it was "either at or beyond the limit of sustainable use" in many parts of the world, when it comes to growing food.

Mr Hoogeveen told Sandra Ferrari, how the new tool works.
