When it comes to dealing with disasters, such as the deadly flooding in Colombia and Peru in recent days, animals are "even more affected" than people.

That's the informed view of Eugenia Morales, who is the disasters project manager for the international animal welfare organization, World Animal Protection.

Ms Morales took part in last month's UN Disaster Risk Reduction conference for the Americas, in Montreal, Canada.

She told Matthew Wells that rural families especially depend on animals for their livelihoods, and in cities, people often put themselves in danger to help a beloved pet during disasters.
