Twin bombings in Syria's capital, Damascus, have been condemned by the UN Secretary-General.

More than 40 people were killed and scores others injured in the attacks, which occurred on Saturday.

Most of those killed were pilgrims who were travelling by bus to a holy site at a cemetery, according to news reports.

Dianne Penn reports.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has extended his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims.

The UN chief was appalled by the "utter disregard for human life" displayed by the perpetrators, according to a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson.

Mr Guterres said those responsible for the bombings, and others who commit such attacks, must be held accountable.
