Schoolteachers have enough on their plate in the classroom, without being expected to be disaster risk managers too.

That's the view of Jair Torres, a disaster risk reduction specialist with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

He said governments and NGOs need to offer them support in the form of expertise, as part of a "holistic" approach to making schools safer and more resilient.

Mr Torres was representing UNESCO at the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, taking place/which took place in Montreal, Canada this week.

Matthew Wells caught up with him at the conference.
