Counter-terrorism cooperation "has been limited," Security Council hears

Counter-terrorism cooperation between Member States to protect "critical infrastructure" needs to be more extensive, according to a senior UN official. "The voice of civilian Syria" speaks out for World Radio Day

Daily broadcasts from a network based in Paris known as Radio Rozana provide Syrian civilians with a vital voice they can trust at home, and abroad. That's the view of Editor-in-Chief Lina Charwaf, speaking to the UN Cultural Agency, UNESCO, in an interview to mark World Radio Day, celebrated on 13 February. She set up the independent radio station in the French capital in 2013 and believes that Radio Rozana has become one important way after nearly six years of brutal civil war for Syrians "to express their souls." UNESCO's Alison Meston asked Ms Charwaf to describe how Radio Rozana got started.

Love is the "only thing" that can disrupt hate: Goodwill Ambassador

Societies need to "commit" to their young people in order to fight violent extremism effectively, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador said. Deeyah Khan is the UN Cultural Organization UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador for artistic freedom and an award-winning documentary filmmaker. For her film, Jihad: A story of the Others, Khan spent two years interviewing active and former Islamist extremists from Europe and North America to find out what makes young people vulnerable to radicalization. Speaking to Lucy Dean, she called for greater compassion from individuals and societies to ensure that young people are not "left behind".
