Spur African development by focusing on successes, not crises: UN Secretary-General

If Africa is to achieve sustainable development, then more emphasis should be placed on its successes, not crises, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters in New York in his first major press conference. The UN chief, fresh from the African Union (AU) Summit in Ethiopia, also addressed issues such as the recent suspension of the refugee programme in the United States. Dianne Penn reports.

UNICEF seeks $3.3 billion in emergency assistance for 48 million children

Almost one in four children today lives in a country affected by conflict or disaster, the UN says, in a call for US$ 3.3 billion to help them. UN Children's Fund UNICEF launched the appeal in Geneva, warning that youngsters are under direct attack in Syria, Yemen and Iraq, as well as in South Sudan and Nigeria. There's a growing threat from malnutrition too, and the agency says it is a factor in 45 per cent of the deaths of under-fives, at risk around the world. Daniel Johnson has more

Putting youth in leadership positions always "pays off", says UN envoy

Young people are still seen as a "problem and liability" in some part of the world and yet, the UN has shown that putting them in leadership positions always "pays off". That's according to the outgoing UN Youth Envoy, Ahmad Alhendawi, who was also the youngest person in UN history to serve at such a senior level. He recalled how, at the time, some were sceptical of his abilities while others found him "too young to lead". Speaking to Basma Baghall ahead of the annual Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, he called for a greater inclusion of young people in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
