Syrian parties taking part in the negotiations in Geneva are being urged by the UN Secretary-General to engage in good faith.

The statement was released by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, late on Thursday, as the warring sides held face-to-face talks in the Swiss city.

António Guterres also commended the work of his Special Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in bringing this about.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

Only a political solution can bring peace to Syria, the Secretary-General stressed, as negotiations between the parties resumed on Thursday.

Recalling the six years of bloodshed the country has witnessed, António Guterres urged those who accepted the UN invitation to the Geneva intra-Syrian talks, to engage in good faith.

While acknowledging that progress will not be easy, Mr Guterres called on the negotiators to redouble their efforts for peace.
