Societies need to "commit" to their young people in order to fight violent extremism effectively, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador said.

Deeyah Khan is the UN Cultural Organization UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador for artistic freedom and an award-winning documentary filmmaker.

For her film, Jihad: A story of the Others, Khan spent two years interviewing active and former Islamist extremists from Europe and North America to find out what makes young people vulnerable to radicalization.

Speaking to Lucy Dean, she called for greater compassion from individuals and societies to ensure that young people are not "left behind".
