The death of four Israeli soldiers in a truck attack in Jerusalem on Sunday has been condemned by a senior UN official in the region.

The attack was carried out by a Palestinian driver who rammed his vehicle into a group of soldiers at a promenade overlooking the Old City.

The perpetrator was later shot dead by other soldiers.

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov stated that such acts undermine peace prospects between Palestinians and Israelis.

The UN Special Coordinator condemned the deadly terror attack in which more than a dozen people were also wounded.

Mr Mladenov added that his thoughts were with the families and friends of the victims.

Mr Mladenov said it was "reprehensible" that some people choose to glorify such acts which he said undermine the possibility of a peaceful future for both Palestinians and Israelis.

"There is nothing heroic in such actions," he stated, while also urging all to maintain calm and to avoid further escalation of violence.
