"Game-changers" in 2017 will allow for positive year says UN President

"Positive" developments can be expected across the world in 2017 despite the ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises that typified 2016; that's according to the President of the UN General Assembly, Peter Thomson. The PGA, as he is known, presides over the General Assembly which is made up of the UN's 193 Member States. He's been speaking to Daniel Dickinson.

"Nexus between terrorism and trans-national organized crime" is key priority

The number one priority for the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the year ahead is fighting the "nexus between terrorism and transnational organized crime." That's according to the man leading the crime-fighting agency, Yuri Fedotov. UNODC's Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, released a few days ago, showed there was a growing link between people trafficking, the migration crisis and conflict. Executive Director Fedotov told Nargiz Shekinskaya how migration routes out of conflict zones were connected to trafficking, where almost a third of victims worldwide are now children.

Former child soldiers are victims not "security threats"

Former child soldiers should be treated as victims and not security threats in the year ahead, the UN special envoy for children and armed conflict has urged. Many of them experience trauma and stigma that can make it difficult to go back to their communities or the classroom, says Leila Zerrougi. She sat down with Jocelyne Sambira to discuss future plans to engage non-State armed groups, which are responsible for the vast majority of grave violations against children. She began by explaining why militia forces like the Lord's Resistance Army and terrorist groups like ISIL or Boko Haram, are using children as executioners or suicide bombers.
