Depriving children of their freedom should be a measure of "last resort", according to a UN independent expert, speaking on Monday.

Manfred Nowak, who is leading a UN Global Study on children deprived of liberty, said that education and social care is better than locking children up in detention centres.

According to the UN's Human Rights Office (OHCHR), child refugees and children living in conflict zones may end up in detention because of their migration status or because they are perceived as a threat to national security.

Many young children are also detained for long periods of time, where they are subjected to "inhuman forms of torture."

Mr Nowak spoke to Priyanka Shankar.
