Despite a decrease in conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan, civilians there continue to face inter-communal violence and other forms of insecurity, the head of UN peacekeeping told the Security Council on Thursday.

Hervé Ladsous has called for continued international action to find lasting solutions so that some 2.6 million displaced people can return to their homes.

Darfur has been on the global agenda since 2003, following the eruption of fighting between Government forces and their allied militia and other rebel groups, which have now splintered.
