For this end-of-year special programme, we're bringing you a thought-provoking discussion between two senior UN officials involved in October's milestone UN Habitat III Conference, on the future of world cities.

Koko Warner of the UN Climate Change Secretariat tells us that cities are "the stage upon which human beings will shape" the battle to stop global warming. And Alexandros Makarigakis of the UN Cultural, Educational and Scientific Organization, UNESCO, says cities have a responsibility to find solutions to the world's sustainability crisis.

Matthew Wells spoke to them both on the final day of Habitat III, a once-in-every-20-years conference, drawing tens of thousands from around the world, which this year took place in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.
