Protect Syria's civilians for the sake of "humanity"

A senior UN humanitarian official has appealed to the international community's "common threads of humanity" to save civilians in the besieged city of Aleppo. Tens of thousands of people remain in rebel-held areas in Aleppo in Syria, as a government offensive to retake the eastern part of the city intensifies. An emergency meeting of the Security Council heard that heavy fighting was expected to continue in the most densely populated areas of the city. Andita Listyarini reports

HIV self-test is key to fighting AIDS, says WHO

Encouraging people to test themselves for HIV could be a global game-changer in the fight to rid the world of AIDS, UN health experts have said. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that while more than 18 million people with HIV are getting life-saving treatment, a similar number are missing out. The agency wants self-testing to be available all around the world as a way of reaching key at-risk populations who face barriers to treatment. To mark World AIDS day on 1 December, Daniel Johnson spoke to WHO’s Dr Gottfried Hirnschall.

Space-based information saving lives on Earth

Satellite imagery, global navigation systems and other applications developed for space exploration are being used by the United Nations to help countries save lives on Earth. An online platform administered by the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) ensures developing nations can access space-based information, for example in the wake of natural disasters. Luc St-Pierre is Chief of UNOOSA's Space Applications Section. Dianne Penn caught up with him in Dubai, at a recent UN meeting which looked at the role of space in socio-economic sustainable development.
