UN Secretary-General-designate António Guterres has promised to make “human dignity the core of his work”.

The former Prime Minister of Portugal and UN High Commissioner for Refugees made the remarks ahead of his swearing-ceremony on Monday.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

In October this year, António Guterres was nominated as the next United Nations Secretary-General in what was described as an “important show of unity” by the Security Council.

He beat 13 candidates…six men and seven women… in an unprecedented selection process where the candidates made open presentations to the UN General Assembly over a period of months.

In his vision for the post, the UN Secretary-General-designate said the world body is “uniquely placed” to connect the dots to overcome global challenges.

The UN can also further strengthen the nexus between peace and security, sustainable development and human rights policies, he added.

Mr Guterres will take office as the 9th UN chief on 1 January, succeeding from Ban Ki-moon.
