Fight to retake Mosul from ISIL "progressing well"

The battle to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul is "progressing well," the UN Security Council has heard. The head of the UN mission in the country updated members on the operation launched by the Iraqi army and its allies to retake the northern city from the terrorist group ISIL, also known as Daesh. The group has occupied the city for two years. Dianne Penn reports.

"Optimism" in face of protracted crisis in Lebanon

A mood of optimism has taken hold in Lebanon since the recent election of a new president despite the challenges posed by a protracted crisis there, the UN Special Coordinator for the country has said. Sigrid Kaag said that the risk of young people being radicalized, as well as the "toxic narrative" around the hosting of refugees, were issues that Lebanon needs to address. Ms Kaag spoke to Daniel Dickinson as she prepared to update the UN Security Council in New York on the situation in the country.

Buildings can play "transformative" role in fighting climate change

Buildings can play a "transformative" role in fighting climate change in cities, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Experts from around the world are currently meeting in Marrakech, Morocco, at the COP22 conference, which is looking at how to meet the goal of keeping global temperature rises to below 2 degrees Celsius. It's estimated that by 2050, two-thirds of the world's population will be living in urban areas, so scientists and architects are now looking at how to promote energy efficient cities and buildings. Jacqueline McGlade is UNEP's Chief Scientist on cities and climate. Jerome Bernard, who is in Marrakech, asked her how buildings can help cut the harmful gas emissions which lead to climate change.
