Security Council nominates António Guterres as the new UN chief

The former Prime Minister of Portugal António Guterres has been nominated as the next United Nations Secretary-General…in what was described as an "important show of unity" by the Security Council. A formal vote was held by acclamation behind closed doors on Thursday 6th October….it followed a series of informal or so-called straw polls in which Mr Guterres emerged as a clear front-runner. The President of the Security Council for the month of October, Vitaly Churkin of Russia emerged from the council chamber to make the announcement of the nomination to the media. The nomination followed an unprecedented selection process during which all 13 candidates…six men and seven women… made open presentations to the UN General Assembly over a period of months. It's the first time in the 70-year history of the organization that has happened. Jocelyne Sambira reports.
